Just wanted to provide some links for those who will be applying for 2007 Whitney permits.  Several changes have been made for the 2007 season:

1)  The "2007 Mt. Whitney Lottery Only" application is the only form to be used for acceptance into the lottery;

2)  Lottery applications will only be accepted by snail mail.  Faxed, emailed, or phoned applications will not be accepted or responded to;

3)  Use a post office return receipt if you want proof the application arrived, or you can include a stamped, self addressed postcard.  The arrival date will be stamped on it and mailed back.  Telephone confirmation not available;

4)  Day hike reservations must be picked up or confirmed earlier than past years.  The new deadline to pick up or confirm a day hike reservation is noon on the day before the hike.  This will allow other parties to utilize canceled space the afternoon before the trip date.  Overnight trips will still have the deadline of 10am on the entry date.

The earliest time to apply for the lottery is February.  Mailed applications must have a February postmark.  Applications that arrive in March but have a February postmark will still be accepted.

About picking up your permit by noon the day before...
In the past, the Forest Service has allowed people to pick up their permits in the night box after hours. This is helpful if you are still 100 miles away at noon on the day before. If you let them know ahead, you can just pick it up as you go by the office on the Badwater route. You might want to check to make sure, but I suspect this service is still available.
