Hi Everyone,

It's probably too early to determine this, but I wanted to begin a discussion about a 2008 solo crossing date.

I'd like to do it after the BWUM, toward the end of July and possibly first week of August.

Thoughts?

Connie,
I am thinking along the same lines as you, with a start date of either the 20th or 27th of July.  It is possible that the Park Service is becoming more restrictive with respect to groups of people starting all at once, so this may become a determining factor.  Marcia is looking into this.

I have not made a crossing before, but I have crewed/paced the last two years.  Do you know if there is any problem with hotel availability after the BWUM crowd clears out?

Hi guys,
Sorry I've dropped off radar for a little while. Didn't mean to leave anyone hanging.
Yes, John and I are looking into the situation with the Park, and we don't have an answer yet. The prevailing question is whether we can continue to meet and start as a group without first acquiring a Special Use Permit. I won't go into the complications of the SUP here, but there's much more involved than just paying the $210 fee. Our wish is that people can continue to run the Solo as we have the past couple years, in a very informal way. But, at this point, we really need the approval of the Park Service to do this. Sadly, the days of people just getting the word around and showing up on the same day are over.

I realize that people need to make plans very soon, especially those who travel long distances. I'll do my best to get more information on this very soon.

Keep in mind that I am aware of no restrictions on single runners doing the Solo at any time, or even a couple runners together. The whole thing is the group size, which includes crew. If you want to set your own date and do your own thing, do it. We'll still do whatever we can to help you. In fact, we have NEVER set a date for other people's crossings. So the whole thing really IS up to you. We just need to find out what the rules are first.

More later...

Hi Jesse,

Once you know firm dates you'll be out there to run, pace, crew, etc., it's best to make a reservation ASAP, at least that's been my experience.  Granted, the lodging facilities are a bit less crowded after the BWUM gang clears, but there are still many tourists who visit Death Valley in the summer months.  I made reservations last year for my July 1st solo three months in advance and many facilities were booked, the Dow Villa being one of them, and so I had to settle for the Whitney Motel down the street - an adequate facility, of course.

Hope we can meet out there this year!

Happy Trails,

Connie

(((Marcia and John)))

Listen...thanks a million for all your efforts with this stuff.  I want to be out there when you guys are, so I'll wait to coordinate a date with you.  I really have no interest in going out there myself or even with one other runner.

I'll wait for you to inform us.

Thanks again,

Connie

Hello everyone,

My first post with such an illustrious group!  This forum is really great for helping to get my arms around this thing.  This will be my first BW and would really prefer that a few others were out there as well (as would my family and crew I'm sure).  The end of July/first of August sounds great to me and allows for some recovery after WS and before Wasatch.  I'll look forward to learning from all of you vets.
If so inclined, pass along your greatest tips for newbies.

Welcome to the forum, Donn, and so nice to see another "Death" Head!  ;)

Marcia and John were instrumental in helping me to the finish last year, as were many other kind and helpful people (I encountered Marcia along the route where she gave me good advice about electrolyte imbalance as I needed to go back to basics, unfortunately, after my stupid faux paus, and she and John and crew and Karen Riddle helped me up Whitney and saw me at the finish), so it's really important to me to have John and Marcia out there again with me when I'm there this year.  After they inform us as to their plans and what gets resolved with the red tape, we'll have a better handle on a date.

I'm hoping with all of my heart that the only person who saw me from the start to the finish, Max, will be out there again with me because she is the reason I finished, but if it doesn't work out that she can be there, I'm sure I will have good crew.

Look forward to meeting you out there this year!

Happy Trails,

Connie Karras

Just a note about our plans...
I'm running Leadville in August, and that's only about six weeks after the earliest July date for the Solo. Leadville is going to be a really tough one for me, so I think I'd better not cut it so close. That only leaves the tail end of August, and that's probably not enough time to recover from Leadville, either, unless I really bomb out there and miss an early cutoff. Could happen, but that doesn't leave much time to plan a Solo. Probably I won't be running a Solo this year.

John is interested in doing another mostly-walking Solo--and trying to make it all in one push, for the first time. I'm waiting for him to make the call, though. If he decides to do it, he might be up for a later date than before, but again, that's his call. If he goes, I'll crew.

Regardless, we will be out at Death Valley several times throughout the spring and summer. We do like to try to make it out there whenever someone's running a Solo, but with potential limits on the total number of people, we don't want to put any group over the limit. Hope we can find a way to work that out.

Marcia,

Best wishes at Leadville!

If you and John can't be there when I'm there, then it's not the end of the world of course - I'm sure there will be others out there around the time I go.

Happy Trails,

Connie

Any takers on a July 27th date?  So far that's what's working best for me but I am willing to go one week in either direction.

Thoughts?

Hello Everyone,

I was hoping the 27th would work for me but I have a few conflicts I can't change.  So, I'm ready to commit to the following Sunday, August 3.  Any takers?

I am willing to commit to July 27th.  Most likely August 3rd will not work for me due to work commitments.  Count me in.
