All,

The Badwater foot races were months ago and there hasn't been any activity to speak of here, so I'm wondering if people care anymore to use this forum?

At this time last year this forum was a hoppin' place. I just signed up to do a solo on July 1, 2007 and want to talk about training with others - is there anybody else out there who feels the same?

Connie,

Of course we are interested in this forum!...we're just recovering from Badwater, thinking of the next race(s) we want to do and trying to come up with the perfect response to all those on the ultralist who can't stop talking about DK  What I would be interested in is a crew report from YOU! 8) I think crew reports are just as important as race reports since the majority of people there are crewing, not running. Also, the crew is who ultimately takes care of the runner, so a good report or two can prepare prospective crew members for the truly inspiring (and sometimes uninspiring and downright ugly) things that a runner does/goes through.

In the meantime, here is a good link for some ultramarathon training:
http://www.halhigdon.com/ultramarathon/ultramarathon2000.htm
It is a six month program geared toward Comrades in June, however you could adjust the dates, modify it with more total mileage on your long runs (especially consider 'time on your feet' ON PAVEMENT as the blisters from being on my feet on pavement so long were my major enemy during the race) and add some heat training starting about 6-8 weeks before your Death Valley trip. I know Chicago is probably starting to cool off now, so you may want to consider Art Webb's sauna heat training schedule to keep you thinking of DV, linked here: http://www.badwater.com/training/webbonheat.html
Of course, you could always come to the Valley of the Sun in June or July, though this year (2006) was dissapointing...it wasn't over 110 until about a week before the race :( And even if I'm not running or crewing in DV, I usually drive around without AC in the summer (unless somebody else is in the vehicle with me :P )

I 'promise' to get a Badwater report posted 'sometime' in the future...I will post it here as well as the ultralist and maybe a blog or two.

This would also be a good opportunity to thank Marcia for 'erasing' the annoying spam posts on this board lately. Thank You!

Cheers,
Robert

Robert!!!  (((hugs)))

It was great seeing you out there this July and congrats on your buckle!  It was such a nice surprise to see you drive into Lone Pine as we were preparing for the last phase through the Alabama Hills to the portals of Whitney....I'm glad we stopped so Bill could eat a little breakfast at the side of the road before ascending or we probably would have missed you.

Hmmm....a report, from me?  Nahhhh.  Bill wrote a great one.  I would just ramble on and on about how beautiful Death Valley is and how I can't understand why it's called Death Valley because there's so much life there and how I want to live there soon...(I've been checking out the real estate ads) and just bore everyone to tears...

Thanks for the great training suggestions.  I did an incredible amount (too much I think) of heat training to prepare for Bill's race, both sauna training and overdressed training but will not begin it so early this time.  The way I did it was such overkill that when I got home I had to go to the endocrinologist to get my hormones back on track....

When do you recommend I begin the sauna training?  6-8 weeks prior to my race date or do you feel that should be started earlier, say, during the Winter?  I just don't want to overdo it again.

Now I came across Hal Higdon's Comrades' training last year while perusing websites and I found it quite interesting.  I will take your advice and give that another look....

Hey, I'll make ya a deal...and two ex-Marines (well, once a Marine...ALWAYS a Marine!) won't reneg on a deal, right?  I mean, if anyone knows the meaning of "Semper Fi," we do!

You write a race report - I'll write a race report!

And yes, aren't those spammers a royal pain in the ass? Thanks Marcia for managing them!

Happy Trails,

Connie Karras

Well I'm glad to see some activity here!
Honestly I've been wondering if maybe it's time to give up and let the forum die. If you lurkers out there want to keep it going, just post something, ANYTHING, and let me know you're still there.

I'm so sorry the forum has been overrun with spam. I try to check at least once a day, and I'm having to spend significant chunks of time "weeding" the membership roster to get rid of spammers. If I axe any legitimate members by mistake, just let me know and I'll reinstate you. But I figure anybody with a drug or porn website is most likely not legit. :-)
Also, John installed new forum software that will make it easier to filter out the spam. I hope so, because I'm gonna scream if I see any more nude pictures of Britney Spears on here!

Anyway, how about some real conversation on here?  I'm in the midst of deciding whether I want to do a third Badwater Solo in 2007. My experiences at the "Big Race" last year kind of soured me to the whole Badwater thing, but after talking to a couple of the Solo runners this week, the spark is lit again. I guess the real decision is whether I want to try to get into Western States. I don't think I can plan to do both Western States AND the July 1st Solo, since they're something like a week apart! Either way, I'm pretty sure I'll be at the July 1st start, whether I'm running or crewing for somebody else.

Okay, I'm rambling. Is anybody listening???

Wait...you mean...Britney Spears isn't doing the solo next July, nude? Well. Dang.

I would be so excited for you if you did Western States! but thrilled to be in Death Valley again too if you're there.

There's a new "hot yoga" place a few miles from my house.. I'm thinking in the spring I can run to yoga, sweat for 90 minutes, and run home, for some semblance of heat training.

Thanks for taking care of the forum, even though I'm 99% lurking!

I want to wish everyone happy holidays and best wishes for the new year.  Our country is at war and my heart is very heavy as a result.  There is so much violence and unrest everywhere.  I'm going to try my best to keep hope and love and the prospect of peace alive despite the hatred among us, as difficult as it is to do that these days.

And Robert...I forced myself to sit still long enough to begin writing my own race report and I'm halfway through it; I plan to post it sometime in January to the forum and a couple blogs as well in the hopes it helps new crew members.  Look forward to yours too and the experiences of other crew members.

Thank you again Marcia and John for continuing to maintain this forum.

Peace and Semper Fi,

Connie Karras

Connie-Marcia
I am very interested in this forum, I haven't had much time to check on it lately but I check it every chance I get. I plan on crewing again this year and hope to make the race list in 2008, if not then I will attempt a solo then. I crewed for Robert in 2006 and it was awesome. I have been tracking this race for years with hopes of participating in it some day. I think eat train and breath Badwater now, I have watched "Running On The Sun" about 30 times I am not exaggerating.

I have a race report just about done, from a crew members point of view that I will submit soon. I went a little over board with details but I wrote it more as a record for myself and to inform my family about the event and my 2006 experience. I will e-mail it to you Robert.

I will definitely make more of an effort to post and stay in touch with the Badwater community. We NEED this forum to stay open. Marcia we are checking on it and count on it for information and updates. Thank you for all your time an efforts and you can count on hearing more from me thats for sure.

Steve,

I wish I had the opportunity to meet you in Death Valley last year...

Sounds like you're certainly planning to be back there this year and I hope our paths can cross eventually - I plan to still be in Death Valley for the official race after my July 1 solo attempt.

I'm looking so forward to your race report.  Please do post a link to it here for everyone to read.  I'll post mine here when it's done. I hope others follow suit.

I think now that the Badwater application process has begun, there will be more participation at the forum.

Happy Trails,

Robert had mentioned  that he had run into you at one point last year. Hopefully this year we will get a chance to meet. I look forward hearing about your training and how things are going for you.

I will be working on getting my mileage up and get in a couple of hundreds in this year. I have done stage races and runs that have totaled up to to 150 and 175 over a number of days but never a straight hundred non stop with out sleep. I am excited about this year and can't wait to get back out to Death Valley.
