Hi guys

I hope you don't mind me posting here. Its not really a badwater related thread but hopefully some of you guys will have done something similar to what I'm planning in training! :)

I'm coming over to the States in June and I plan to attempt a R2R2R run of the Grand Canyon. I've read lots of R2R2R reports and most are (sensibly) run early Spring or late Fall. I'd like to get some advice from someone who has done this (or a R2R) in the height of Summer just to get some tips, and I'm posting here on the off chance that someone here has done this, or knows someone who has.

I've hiked for the past 2 years Rim-Rim in the height of summer and I know that the heat in the canyon is going to be dangerously hot. My plan is to start around 3am and run from South Rim to North Rim then to Bright Angel Campground and rest in the creek for the afternoon to stay out of the heat. Then run back up to South rim as the sun goes down.

All of the reports I have read so far have been very helpful but, as I say, the one thing missing from them is the experience of the heat being a complicating factor and I think I really need to hear first hand what to expect before feeling confident about doing this.

Any advice is greatly appreciated. Also, although it's close to badwater itself (planning on June 19), if anyone would like to join me, you will be more than welcome! :)

Thanks

I don't have a problem with your posting this here. We're not really picky about everything having to be on topic, as long as people don't abuse the forum. And this is a related topic, since it deals with extreme heat.

Just one thought: are you a member of the Ultra List? That's probably the best place I can think of to ask this question. Their archives are full of posts about R2R2Rs. If you are not familiar with the List, see http://listserv.dartmouth.edu/archives/ultra.html.

From what you say, you are already more familiar with the GC in summer than most. You are aware, then, of the unforgiving nature of the Canyon in summer. You could die for any mistake you might make. I do not know the Canyon well enough to give you any constructive advice except that, if you decide to go, you need to heat train as if your life depends on it. It does.

Marcia, thank you! Ultra-list looks very interesting, I hadn't heard of it before.

The feedback I'm getting is that it is too dangerous at that time of  year, especially as I can't heat train properly due to living in a cold country! But its the kind of climate and terrain that I love so I may build up to it for the next year or two.

I'm actually hoping to run the Run with the Devil Marathon at Lake Mead this year so I wanted to do some running in the canyon to tray to acclimatise as best as possible for 26th June. I may try a few miles, or maybe rim to river to rim instead.

Thank you for your help :)
