After hearing today that gas has already gone over $3/gal in California, I figured no transportation was going to get any cheaper before July, and booked plane tickets. Southwest gave me the best deal by a few bucks (Portland to Vegas), and their $99 "internet fares" were mostly gone from the mid-day flights and available only on the early morning and late evening flights. Just in case that info is useful to any of you.... :)

Yikes! So far, the only place I know of that gas is >$3 is IN Death Valley. That is, the gas stations at Furnace Creek, Stovepipe, and Panamint. We were there 2 weekends ago, and I think the price at Stovepipe was $3.20. Furnace Creek was higher. Last I noticed, it was $2.80-something in Fresno.
But your point is well taken. Anyone who hasn't yet made travel arrangements should probably make haste.

P.S. Never mind what I said yesterday about the price of gas. We were down in Fresno again today, and saw prices as high as $3.13 (for regular).
(The price in California generally peaks in early summer, as they're making the changeover from the winter gas formula to the summer mixture. Hopefully it'll go back down a little before July.)
