Memorial Day Weekend, anyone?
In past years, some of the runners have gathered in Death Valley to train over Memorial Day weekend. John and I are planning to do this again in 2007. We'll be staying in Stovepipe Wells. We'll arrive either Thursday night (May 24th) or Friday morning (the 25th) and stay through mid-afternoon on Monday (the 28th). I'm sure some of the other runners will be coming too. Anyone who's interested in desert running is invited to join us.
We have space for another 1 or 2 people in our room (1 extra double bed). If you need a place to stay and would like to share expenses, please let us know!

I would love to say yes to your invitation, unfortunatly I will have to save my time off and funds for the Race where I will be crewing again this year. It would be great to go out there and do some heat training. Fortunatley being from the Phoenix area I should be able to get some heat training here. Last year it didn't really get hot here until the week before the race in July.

Steve,
Sorry you can't make it. I think the best part of the Memorial Day thing has been meeting so many people who are connected with the Big Race or the Solo. Maybe our paths will cross at some point.

Marcia, I agree that many times the best part of events is meeting people. Endurance runners are among the greatest group of people I have met. I enjoy their company and their strories definatly a different group. It is neat to be around others who don't consider what we do crazy. At least not any crazier than something they would do.
I am sure our paths will cross at some point, hopefully sooner than later.
I am just getting over a real bad cold I picked up last week. I very rarely ever get sick so I don't handle it very well. I have been running a light fever with a cough which is kind of weird it is not your regular type cold with the runny nose and sneezing. It came on right after a real hard work out last Saturday morning I felt like I had breathed in alot of smog. I used to get sick like this in Los Angeles when I did century rides on smoggy days. It never lasted this long though, sometimes I wonder if I am doing more harm than good working out in the city.
Anyways just thought I would share a little personal info. I will be in touch with you and all our Badwater friends as another season nears. Adios Amiga

I have been training for Lake Hodges 50k thru the winter. But I am starting my heat training this weekend in Palm Springs. I want to run the Solo this year, only time and training will tell. I just started reading your forum again after the Solo Roster was pulled off InyoUltra's webpage.

Greg,
If you want to give your full name and where you're from, I'll put you on the roster. It'll be up on this site shortly.

Good afternoon Marcia, my name is Greg Trujillo I am from Nuevo,Ca. I had heard from somebody at Adventure Corp. that the solo was canceled. That bummed me out until I checked your webpage. I was glad to hear the Solo was still on. As of now I will be putting my effort into training for the Solo. I crewed and paced the Big race last year. I think I will just enjoy that race from the sidelines as of now. Plans can always change, who knows. Just keep running.
Hi Greg,
Who did you crew and pace for last year? I was out there for Bill LaDieu and I wonder if we crossed paths...
I hadn't realized the Solo had been canceled at some point. That is news to me.
Happy Trails,
Connie Karras

Greg...
No, the Solo was NEVER canceled. Just a nasty rumor.
It cannot be canceled, because it is not an "event." It is simply a bunch of individuals who get together and decide they're going to run the course, starting on the same day. (Or you can do it on a DIFFERENT day, and you're still part of the Solo.) As long as ANYONE is planning to run the course, the Solo is not canceled.
For now, I'm keeping a list of everyone who's planning to run a Solo Crossing. But even if I DON'T keep a written list, people will talk and decide to get together and run. All you have to do is show up at the starting line, and you're doing it. The course is public domain. There really isn't any need to sign up. I'm just keeping a list because it's fun to know who else is going to do it.
I'll add you to the list.

Thanks for the clarification, Marcia. :)
I'm getting so excited about this - and scared at the same time! This'll be my first attempt.
I wish EVERYONE the best, whether you're running on July 23, July 1, or any other day you're attempting a solo in that beautiful place!! I can't wait to go back there this year.
Good luck with your training everyone.

Hello Connie, last year was the best, and the worst. I crewed and paced Pam Reed. She had the worst race of her life, and I had the best time of my life. She is really nice I wish she had a better race. She was very sick feeling the day before and the day of the race. I learned alot from her crew chief in the months before the race. I was floating on thin air for months after that race.
Marcia, I think some people (don't want to say who) may have told others the Solo was canceled after the roster was pulled. I am glad to chat with such nice people. My crew will be running the Palm Spring 1/2 marathon tomorrow, I get to give them all the support I can. After all they keep me alive in DV.
Hi Greg,
I really feel for everyone on her team, Greg.
Coincidentally I was at medical around the time she was brought in for IV - John Vonhof was working on Bill's feet as I looked on - and I remember feeling badly for her - she looked so weak and sick.
I might have seen you in there and not known who you are, but if you're doing a Solo this year, I will have the opportunity to meet you! Good luck with your training...let's keep the training thread going so we can all learn from and support each other, whether it's the Big Race or the Solos we're doing...

Connie, Sorry not to have replied to your reply. I had a computer issue that kept me racking my brain to get back online. We took Pam to the medics twice. She never had an IV, the main concern was low blood pressure. The decision to pull her from the race came later after the second visit. That left me at Stovepipe Wells waiting for my ride which was our Ice runner at about midnight.
Tonight we just walked in after going to the LA marathon expo for the day. Some of my crewmembers are doing LA marathon tomorrow, I get to be their support and driver for the day. My first training trip to DV this year will be April 6, that Friday is my Friday off. That is the day before my birthday so I plan to cover some of the course. After that we plan to return every other week thru mid May. I need to check the other topics to see if anybody has other training dates set. I can't make the training run in late May because, I'm running Rock N Roll Marathon in San Diego the following weekend.

Greg,
We'll have to keep in touch. I hope to get out to DV again some weekend between now and Mem Day. John and I went last weekend. It was mostly a bum-around-in-the-desert trip. We drove down to Badwater, walked around and took a few pictures. I find it very inspiring and motivating just to go to that spot. John and I did a 10-mile run/walk on the West Side Road (the dirt road that goes through the Badwater Basin). Lovely temperature for running; not so good yet for heat training. I came down with a migraine later, so we didn't do any more training. On Sunday we drove up to Mahogany Flat, which is the trailhead to Telescope Peak. I'm thinking it might be fun to hike to the peak sometime at Memorial Day. On the way home, we drove through Lone Pine and dropped in on Ben and Denise Jones. Hadn't seen them since last summer, so it was nice to spend time with them again. They're wonderful people, and great inspiration.
Anyway, John and I aren't big planners. We might decide the night before that we're going out to Death Valley. We tend to camp in the back country on these trips, so we can be a little hard to track down. But I'll try to let you know when we're going. It would be fun to meet up for some training, and maybe some dinner.
Oh, I should mention that we're probably going to Lone Pine the first weekend in May, to run the Wild Wild West Marathon and 50K. I highly recommend that race. John ran the marathon last year, but I had gallbladder surgery a few days before, and had to sit it out. It can be a little warm by then, so it's possibly good heat training. Anyway, you couldn't ask for nicer scenery for a race. We plan to be there.

Hi Greg,
My apologies...thank you for setting the record straight. I obviously made the incorrect assumption she was being prepped for an IV.
I can't make the Memorial Day Weekend either, unfortunately.
Good luck with your marathons! I have a 100 mile trail run coming up in mid-April I'm training for myself. I haven't gotten around to posting my training schedule yet but plan to make time to do that.
Are you interested in posting yours too?
Happy Trails,
Connie
