Who's Running a Solo in 2011?
Hello, lurkers. It's that time of year again. I know you're out there. Maybe you don't qualify for the Big Race. Or you've entered the Big Race, but might not be chosen. Maybe you can't afford the entry fee. Maybe you're just a free spirit. Whatever the reason, I know some of you out there are thinking about running a Solo Crossing.
Whoever you are, I personally invite you to use this forum. Let us know if you're planning to do a Death Valley Crossing. Ask questions. Look for crew. Or just talk. We've been overrun with spammers lately, so it would be nice to have some genuine conversation. (Just please don't link to your real estate business or your favorite online poker website!)
Anyway...SUMMER IS COMING! Maybe I'll see some of you in Death Valley?

Hoping to be crewing a solo runner this summer. I've crewed the big race with him for friends 3 times (2007,8,9) now it is his turn to run via a solo. He's a member of this message board so I'll let him post in due course.
Marcia: Going to email you following up from the one I sent last year :-)

I think it was the weather that got up to above 80 degrees last week that got me feeling that "bug". You know what bug "The Badwater Bug", if the weather keeps going in the right direction I will be going to DV to train again.

Greg (and others),
Let me know if you are planning a training trip to DV and want some company. I'm not sure if we want to depend on our truck out there at this point, but John and I do like to go out there sometimes. We could potentially run along or crew if you're out there training.

Everytime we train in DV we think, this would be a great place to visit in the cold part of the year. We might after 6 years go out in the cold part of the year to sight see.
I am planning on starting a solo run on either July 23rd or July 30th. Leaning toward the 23rd. Have 3 or 4 crew but could always use another warm body to help out if anyone is interested.

Idunno...If I'm not careful, I'm gonna catch the bug again myself. I keep looking at my 46:20 and thinking....I wonder if I could do it faster.

I am holding back on the cold weather time until the temps move up a little. We can not go to Badwater without running. The last time we did, it was over 100 my family knows I'm crazy. The crew must be kept out of the sun if the runners wants to live. That was their motto after they ran.
Good to see some action on this site again. I guess its that time of year to start planning. I am really hoping to give it a go this year. Will commit yes or no very soon. Denalifc will be crewing for me should it be a go. Stay tunned. Need to see about Whitney permits and availability.

135 miles have been as far as I wanted to go. Can you give an update on the lottery process? Maybe 146 could be a new goal.

Mt. Whitney Lottery opens February 1st.
Here is an information sheet from the Forest Service concerning new regulations.
http://www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_DOCUMENTS/stelprdb5125183.pdf
If you do not make the lottery, it is sometimes possible to get "walk-in" permits at the ranger station.
There is all sorts of information on the Inyo National Forest website. Home page is:
(okay, that didn't work.)
If in doubt, just do an internet search on "whitney trail permit."
Make sure you get the last word from a USFS website--not somebody else.
And make sure you are looking at information for 2011 (or whatever year you plan to run). The rules change almost annually.
Good luck!

Marcia thank you for the information on the lottery for Mt Whitney. I have not confirmed a solo yet but hope to know this week. There are forms on the site to fill out and mail in to the Forest Service and the applications will be accepted from Feb.1 to March 15Th. It is $15.00 a person and you can fill out one application per group up to 15 people.
Just a side note we are in the 80's now here in Phoenix. I am getting psyched!

Ok it is official I am announcing my attempt at a BW solo. A very experienced crew is in place and chomping at the bits to get going, details need to be worked out.
Marcia thank you for the documentation info on the other post, deniflac will be one of the crew members. I am not sure of the date but we are looking at July 16th, my birthday for a start. More info to come later.
It has been many years of hoping to make this attempt, I am happy with my choice to go solo rather than applying for the official race, although it does have its history and excitement and I have enjoyed the years of crewing and pacing out there. I have in one year or an another run every mile of the course except the first 17. I have paced about 173 miles on the course at all times of the day and night so I am familar with what I am getting myself into (which is even crazier) and look forward to finally giving it a shot myself.

Looks like I will be doing my solo run starting Sat July 16 and hope for a finish at the Portals sometime Monday morning. I sent in my request for Mt Whitney permits back in early February, so hopefully I will be able to summit as well. If so, this will be on Tuesday morning.
Having crewed/paced at the Big Race for 3 years, I thought it was time I try it too.
Looking forward to challenging myself in something I've thought about for a number of years now, following in the footsteps of many a great runner who tested themselves along Death Valley.
Perhaps I'll see some of you out there.
Bring on Summer!
Dale Perry
I forgot to mention I will have a 6-person crew (3 crewing at a time in 8-hour shifts) who have either run the Big Race (some multiple times) and/or have crewed there.
I've already made my lodging reservations at Stovepipe Wells and Lone Pine.

I received notification from Inyo National Forest that my request for Mt Whitney permits was accepted (on 4/2/2011). I will be summiting Whitney, along with my entire crew, on Tues, July 19, the day after my planned BW solo finish sometime early Monday (if things go well).
Looking forward to the adventure.
Dale
