Good Morning!

My name is Jason and I am going to try to run badwater with a crew...

there does that count as a AA meeting start or what? I'm really looking forward to giving this a shot, but wasn't sure where to get the info such as suggestions, thoughts etc.. I live in SD so I can go train in that area easily enough, but beyond training I'm sure there are lots of little things that will help this trip.

Anyway hoping to learn a lot, and get to know everyone else who thinks running in the desert in summertime just sounds great :) Heard there were rules to be official finisher (July, Aug etc..) can't wait to read them.

I'm also thinking of starting Aug 1st, any reason that might be a bad date? And will be looking for crew, hopefully with some experience as I havent been out there to run/crew before.

btw do you need permits for Mt Whitney to run up it a bit?

Thanks
Jason

Hi Jason,

I'm hoping that others will chime in. The Forum has been too quiet lately.

First, I'd like to say that I'm not any particular authority on how to run this thing. There are others out there who know much more. But I'm glad to help in any way that I can. I just posted some information in another thread, so have a look around.

For your starting date, anytime during the July-August window is fine. Just make sure you don't plan to run a Solo Crossing during the Big Race. If you're planning to summit Mt. Whitney, your best bet might be to enter the permit lottery and try for several dates. After you see what day you can do the Whitney Trail, you can count back to your start date. Keep in mind that you want to be off Trail Crest before afternoon to avoid potential thunderstorms. Another item of concern is lodging. Book early. Rooms in Death Valley are limited and tend to fill up--even in mid-summer.

You do need a permit for Mt. Whitney anytime you plan to go beyond Lone Pine Lake. Look at the Inyo National Forest website for permit information. The rules change slightly from year to year, so I will not post anything about it at this point. You can search "Mt. Whitney Lottery" and find information. Just make sure you're reading the US Forest Service website, and make sure it is not information from a previous year.

Your best bet at this point is to read everything you can find about hot-weather running, Death Valley, and Badwater (both Big Race and Solo Crossings). Find crew and start educating them now. There are lots of people floating around who have either run or crewed before, who are glad to lend a hand. Another good source of crew is people who WANT to run it. Family members can be good resources, but keep in mind that it is often very hard for them to watch you suffer. We've seen some terrible family fights out there.

Do your homework. Ask lots of questions. Train for heat, distance, and hills. Find a way to simulate the conditions as closely as you can. Learn how YOUR body reacts--how much fluid you need, how to manage your electrolytes, and what your stomach will tolerate. Find clothing that works for you. And then get out there and run it.

Simple, huh?

Thanks for your response! I didnt even think about how hard it might be to find lodging yet :) I have a lot to learn. I grabbed some books, and will be touring this site trying to glean as much insight as possible. I'm really excited and hope to get out there a few times between now and my 'official' crossing to feel the heat/sun and just test it out.

This forum is great!
